Description
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Barry wavy of six Or and Gules, three gunstones one and two fimbriated of the first, that in chief bearing a pheon of the last.  Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Gold scroll inscribed GLADIATORES LIBERTATE in Black letters.

Symbolism
The colors yellow and scarlet are for Artillery.  The wavy background symbolizes overseas service.  The three gunstones represent the three island areas of New Guinea, Leyte and the Southern Philippines.  The pheon, representing an early type of artillery, symbolizes the assault landing in the Philippines.  The motto translates to Defenders of Freedom.

The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 6 April 1956.
